Does anyone else's MC have insane toe hair? My kitten has the hairiest toes ever.

Image
The title comes from the social media website: Reddit.com, where they have a thriving forum about the 'MC' which is how Maine Coon afficionados refer to their cats. This young MC has perfectly tufted paws as per the breed standard. One of the signs of a genuine Maine Coon cat. They are a badge of honour! Image: Reddit user: u/Freeflybudgie The answer to the question will be YES for genuine Maine Coons as 'well tufted' paws are part of the CFA breed standard. In other words, MC breeders affiliated with the CFA have to create cats with tons of 'toe hair' as this Reddit user calls it. The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) breed standard for the MC's feet: "LEGS and FEET: legs substantial, wide set, of medium length, and in proportion to the body. Forelegs are straight. Back legs are straight when viewed from behind. Paws large, round, well-tufted . Five toes in front; four in back.2 You probably know that the breed standard is the breeding guideline on a...

Discussing the Maine Coon's hairy feet

Image
We know that the Maine Coons has hairy feet. They have tufts of hair sticking out between the toes. It varies between the cats but you will see some extraordinary photographs of very long hair tufts poking out through the paw pads going downwards. This means that the fur is between the floor and the paw pads when they walk. The Maine Coon cat must have hairy feet as per the cat breed standard of all the cat associations. RELATED:  Maine Coon has the most amazing 'tufted paws' that you'll ever see . The Maine Coon cat's hairy feet are wonderful. Image: Mon Balon. This is a neat topic for discussion. Do you trim them? If a Maine Coon owner has a hard floor which are quite common these days and if that floor is shiny because it is well polished, there may be a slight risk of a Maine Coon cats slipping and sliding on it because their hair tufts are in between their paw pads and the floor. More hairy feet! Image: Facebook. I think that's a fair assessment.  It is based u...

Maine Coon physical adaptations against harsh winter climate in Maine

Image
Maine winters The state of Maine in the United States has a cold winter climate. I'm told that the cold season lasts for 3.3 months from late November to early March with an average daily high temperature below 34°F which is just above freezing point. The coldest month of the year in Maine is January with an average low of 8°F and a high of 23°F which is well below freezing. In the snow! Image: MikeB. Adaptations over 400 years in Maine The point of the introduction is that if we agree that the Maine Coon cat originates in the state of Maine which it almost certainly does, we can suggest that this cat breed developed physical adaptations in its coat primarily for survival in harsh winter climates. Maine in the late 1800s. Image in public domain. Coat The coat is shaggy and has a water-resistant top layer of fur. The downy undercoat is like a duck down filling for a duvet. Shaggy coat! Are paw pad tufts of hair obligatory for Maine Coon cats?

Image
Yes, is the answer. The full-blown version of Maine Coon paw pad tufts of fur has a messy appearance, but it is very functional.  And the breed standard insists that Maine Coon have fur sticking out between their toes. The CFA breed standard is clear: " Paws large, round, well-tufted ". The phrase "well tufted" (a very cat fancy phrase) essentially means plenty of fur sticking out between the toes. Maine Coon paw pad tufts of hair as per the breed standard. Image: Flickr photographer: Sage. This means that it is obligatory if a breeder wants their cats to be in line with the breed standard. All Maine Coon breeders should desire this.  It is their raison d'etre. The breed standard is their firm guide.  RELATED: Cat Paw Hair . The reason why the administrators of the CFA and other cat associations insist on copious amounts of paw pad fur is because they see the Maine Coon as a natural American cat at heart. It is America's home-grown purebred cat. It is this a...

Maine Coon toe tufts - to trim or not to trim??

Image
Maine Coons have tufty toes! It is part of their appearance and desirable. The breed standard mentions them and therefore Maine Coons have to have them ! But, interestingly, a mother and cat owner on the mumsnet.com website did raise a question about these fluffy appendages. She asked whether you should trim tufts of fur which stick out between the toes of a Maine coon cat in order to stop the fur picking up bits of poo from the cat litter.  It's a worthy question and I guess sometimes bits of dirt and detritus might get trapped within these tufts of fur but they should not be trimmed. I don't believe that any part of the domestic cat, whether they are a moggy or a purebred, pedigree cat, should be altered unless it is for a vital medical reason and only if it is in the interests of the cat. For instance, it might be necessary to give a Maine Coon a lion cut for medical reasons. It would be rare. Fortunately, the mother who asked the question got the same answer from ano...

Picture of an humungous Maine Coon held by woman with tattoos

Image
This is a very impressive grey tabby Maine Coon with shaggy fur. The outstanding feature is the cat's size. He is one of those super-sized Maine Coons which are becoming increasingly common on the internet because people love to see humungous Maine Coons. It is the biggest domestic cat made bigger. Size counts in the world of cats. Humungous Maine Coon held by woman with tattoos. Photo: Pinterest. The cat looks as if he has been painted into the photograph. It is almost unreal. We are getting used to very large Maine Coons. But they are unusual. Look at the tufts of hair between the toes. This is very Maine Coonish. They are written up in the breed standard so they are desirable. They hark back to the days when the cat was a working barn cat on farms in Maine, USA.
