3 purebred Maine Coon rescue cats for rehoming in Wales

Image
For international visitors who are unsure, Wales is in the UK. And the Maine Coon Cat Club which was established in 1985 and is affiliated to the GCCF (the premier cat Association in the UK) have three purebred, rescue Maine Coon cats up for adoption.  Aurora The first one lives in Swansea and the owner is giving up their Maine Coon whose name is Aurora because her resident cats will not accept her and she will not accept them. The owner feels that Aurora would be happier as an only cat.  She is looking for the best home possible for Aurora. She is a three-year-old, brown tabby-and-white. She describes her as a little nervous until she gets to know you. She tends to hide but will get over it and is happy to be cuddled and enjoys a brush. Aurora needs time and attention and my guess is she would like to be in a home where the owner is around all the time and where it is quiet and calm. If you want to adopt Aurora you will have to pay a rehoming donation of £200 to the club. Pip...

The Maine Coon was not always a popular cat breed

Image
In 2022 the Maine Coon (MC) is in the top 3 most popular cat breeds and rightly so. They have a great appearance and big is best for a lot of people who are in the market to adopt a cat companion.  It is hard to believe that in the mid-20th century (1950) the breed was declared extinct! That was probably a guess and an exaggeration but clearly there were very few Maine Coon cats in the USA at the time. Maine Coon. Showing the ruff around the neck, the lynx-tipped ears and the general size. This is a tabby Maine Coon which are very popular. The ruff is amazing on this cat. The photograph is in my opinion in the public domain. Before that moment, the last Maine Coon to win at a cat show was in 1911, 40 years earlier. This sharp decline is all the more mystifying because at the first North American cat show held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on May 8, 1895, a female tabby MC, Cosey, won the best in show.  Cosey was owned by Mrs Fred Brown who was presented with a silv...

Image
Here is a list of Maine Coon clubs and associations as at 2021 which may not be comprehensive but which you might find useful nonetheless. Clubs and associations tend to come and go but the ones mentioned here are well-established. Maine Coon (brown tabby) siting on a table looking very cute. Photo in public domain. The Maine Coon Cat Club , affiliated to the GCCF and established in 1985 (UK based). In 1995 it published a guide to the breed: Introducing the Maine Coon . They have an initial joining fee of 1 pound with a single annual subscription of 5 pounds or a joint annual subscription of 7 pounds. For those under 16 they have a junior subscription of £2.50 but juniors have no voting rights. They have forms on their website to complete. They have a Facebook page, Maine Coon Cat Club UK , on which they say that the club currently has five hundred members, both in Britain and abroad. Membership is open to anyone. You don't have to own a Maine Coon to join. Many of their members...

Maine Coon Cat Mug

This is for people living in Britain as I expect that the Maine Coon Cat Club won't ship internationally. The Maine Coon Cat Club in England is commemorating the club’s silver anniversary (25 years) and they have commissioned special porcelain mugs with a Maine Coon on the side. They are classy and tasteful. They cost £6.50 including postage. If you buy at a cat show they cost £4.25. Go to this page if you are interested .

Rasclub Maine Coon

Rasclub Maine Coon is a Dutch Maine Coon cat club. This is their website . The Dutch are as keen on their purebred cats as the Americans it appears.

United Maine Coon Cat Association

The  United Maine Coon Cat Association is a Maine Coon cat club that is affiliated to one of the cat associations, the CFF, the Cat Fanciers' Federation , Inc. which is a "feline registry with clubs and judges in northeastern portions of the United States". The word "united" in its title comes from the "formulation of a unified standard" (breed standard) for the Maine Coon. At the time of the club's creation (1972) there were a many breed standards that were slightly different. This is because there were many cat associations who wrote their own breed standards. The intention in 1972 was to create one breed standard - the master guidelines regarding appearance - for all the various cat associations. See: Too many cat associations and a page on the major cat associations and here is a link to the United Maine Coon Cat Association .
