RSPCA have seen a 300 percent increase in Maine Coons abandoned to their shelters over the last 6 years

Image
Note: I don't wish to put people off buying a Maine Coon. They are amazing. But I just like addressing reality. A reality check to make sure adopters know all there is to know before diving in because it is expensive and you want to spend wisely and know what the overall cost over say 14 years will be for a Maine Coon (a lot 😓) The Mail Online has, I believe, helped people who are considering adopting one of the popular purebred cats. People want to buy a purebred cat need to think hard about the purchase - and it is a purchase with quite a lot of money being handed over - in terms of the health of the cat that they are buying and not so much the appearance. That advice in fact comes from the RSPCA who claim, correctly, that cat breeders tend to focus too much on appearance to try and create a cat which fits exactly cat association's breed standard rather than focusing on the health of the animal that they are creating. Ultimately, in the long-term, health is more important ...

Surge in abandoned cats at Maine's animal shelters

Image
I picked up on this story about feral and abandoned cats reportedly at an all-time high in the US state of Maine because you have to juxtapose this report against the well-known fact that the state of Maine is the historic home of America's favourite purebred cat, the Maine Coon.  The Maine Coon is described as America's cat. It kind of looks like an American cat because it's larger and more glamorous than other cat breeds. Everything is large and larger-than-life about the Maine Coon but sadly everything is larger-than-life about the number of animals at shelters in the state of Maine and these two bits of information are not good bedfellows. Maine animal shelters are asking for help as rescues across the western and central part of the state are reaching maximum capacity.   (Greater Androscoggin Humane Society) It brings it home to us that the Maine Coon cat is created by cat breeders. I'm not complaining about cat breeders. They have their hobby businesses and it hel...

Ginger Maine Coon with underbite (malocclusion). Cause?

Image
Malocclusion is the imperfect positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed. There are various versions of it. The lady who cares for this extreme-bred, ginger Maine Coon says her cat has an underbite. It is hard to see in the photo. It means that the lower jaw protrudes further out than the upper jaw. It looks relatively slight in this cat. Ginger Maine Coon with underbite (malocclusion). Cause? Probably inbreeding. Photo: u/jourdanlc  She writes on Reddit: Vet thinks he’s around 4 or 5 years! Yeah, he was dumped out in our neighborhood last Christmas 🥺 we’re in Alabama so tbh it’s not surprising. The animals laws here are practically non-existent. I’ll look that up! He’s definitely been a great kitty! She doesn't have a great regard for animal welfare in Alabama 😉. I am sure that she is right. Imagine dumping a genuine Maine Coon. And one with a great character. Really careless and callous I'd say. And rare too. Very few Maine Coons are abandoned. But what about the u...

Bromance in the Highlands: William the Scot and Wallace his Maine Coon

Image
This is a cross-post because the story is sweet. It is the story of an abandoned Maine Coon because he was too big, too greedy and too demanding according to his previous 'owner'. Now he is loved. And, yes, he is demanding! Demanding of love and attention.  Bromance in the Highlands: William the Scot and Wallace his Maine Coon.  Photo: Katrina Stewart. Bromance in the Highlands: William the Scot and Wallace his Maine Coon. Photo: Katrina Stewart. He was adopted by William, an ex-military man who lives with Katrina Stewart. She calls herself Kat, an apt name. She takes good photos. It all adds up to a nice package. All the elements are in place and I think the William and Wallace bromance will become big on social media.  At the moment they have a nice Facebook page with over 700 followers but the number is climbing. It will, partly because I have publicised it and they deserve it! I love the way William loves having Wallace on his shoulders or on his head. This cat a...
