People very rarely surrender Maine Coon cats. Discuss.

Image
We are in an era of post-Covid and high inflation. Inflation has not affected every country equally with America doing better than many others and the UK doing rather badly with inflation at about 10%. But there is real pressure on family finances which is having a knock-on effect concerning cat and dog ownership. A rare Maine Coon x American Curl hybrid mix that was at a shelter. I bet they found a new home fast! Photo: Friends for Life Rescue Network on Instagram. We are told by a number of animal rescue organisations that they are experiencing fewer adoptions and more surrenders. This does not apply across the board but there is a trend. For example, Business Insider reports on the Casper Humane Society in Wyoming who told them that they have stopped listing animals waiting to be rehomed because it became "too overwhelming". I interpret that to mean that the list kept on growing with not enough people coming forward to adopt. Craig Cummings, the director of Casper Humane ...

Maine Coon rescue USA and Maine Coon rescue UK

Image
If you are looking to adopt a genuine Maine Coon rescue cat from an organisation involved in Maine Coon (MC) rescue you will surely be disappointed. And it doesn't matter whether you are living in the UK or the USA. Forget the other countries - no chance 😒😉. I have done some digging around on the Internet and you will find organisations with websites saying that they only adopt out Maine Coon cats but then quite quickly you realise that these are Maine Coon mix cat and there are very few if any purebred Maine Coon cats for adoption either in the USA or UK as rescue cats. This is Aurora at the Maine Coon cat club in the UK, and she is a rescue cat. She is one of only 2 purebred (claimed) Maine Coon I have seen for adoption on either side of the Atlantic Ocean at Sept 27, 2022 😎😊😉😢. She looks like a female Maine Coon I have to say. The Maine Coon cat club in the UK has one (perhaps two)  rescue cat at the moment and her name is Aurora (see above) and I think that she has been ...

Are there any genuine Maine Coons at "Maine Coon Rescue" organisations?

Image
I have just visited several online Maine Coon rescue organisations. They are charities run by volunteers and they are meant to be adopting out Maine Coon cats judging by the names of their charities. But when you visit these websites, you immediately notice that the cats advertised for adoption are either Maine Coon mix cats or they cannot vouch for the pedigree of the cats advertised for adoption. Or they are clearly random bred (mixed breed) cats as seen below. Maine Coon mix at a Maine Coon cat rescue organisation online. A nice tabby moggie. By all means adopt the cat. You'll do well to but don't think you are adopting anything other than a tabby moggie. The rescue organisations are being less than honest. I don't want to be mean-spirited or in any way undermine these cat rescue charities. They do great work. However, if a cat rescue organisation is advertising rescued Maine Coon cats for adoption, you expect them to be listing purebred Maine Coon cats. But they aren...

Two rescued Maine Coons ready for adoption in London, UK

Image
The Facebook page of The Maine Coon Cat Club has led me to the website of The Maine Coon Cat Club on which they have a page concerning welfare and rescue which includes cats currently needing new homes.  So, on this page, there are two male Maine Coon cats in need of adoption. They are rescue cats. They are both in London, UK.  We are not told by The Maine Coon Cat Club whether there is documentary evidence regarding these two cats in respect of their pedigree.  So, if you're going to apply to adopt one of these cats, I think you will need to ask about the pedigree and whether there is any paperwork that goes with the cat because without that you don't have certainty that you are adopting a genuine Maine Coon cat.  This may put a spanner in the works. Perhaps you won't like to hear this. But I think you have to do due diligence when you are supposedly adopting a purebred Maine Coon cat. The same will apply to any purebred cat. And it doesn't matter whether they...

Maine Coon Rescue on Facebook does not rescue Maine Coons

Image
I think this needs to be stated but it may be apparent to other people. You will find on the Internet "Maine Coon Rescue" organisations. They purport to rescue Maine Coons and then find a new owner for them. But it is impossible for these organisations to be viable because there are so few Maine Coons that need rescuing for obvious reasons. Maine Coon Rescue on Facebook does not rescue Maine Coons!. My message to them. No response 4 hours later. Still waiting. One such organisation is on Facebook. It is called 'Maine Coon Rescue' and it has supporters and about 27,000 followers. It is ranked highly in reviews. BUT this organisation cannot be rescuing genuine Maine Coons. They say that they rescue Maine Coon mix cats but anybody can say that. They have a calendar and featured on the calendar is a genuine Maine Coon. This is misleading. Maine Coon mix cats look like medium-longhaired moggies. And they are medium-longhaired moggies. A Maine Coon is either a Maine Coo...

Maine Coon extracted from car engine compartment in 3-hour operation

Image
Three people namely the owner of the car, the operations manager, Ruthie Jesus, for the Arizona Humane Society (AHS), and the AHS vice-president of medical operations, Dr. Melissa Thompson, took three hours to remove a 2-year-old, female Maine Coon trapped in a car engine compartment in a very difficult position where she had become badly burnt after the car engine had been started.  Cindy Lou Who after her rescue and treatment. Photo: AHS. After starting the engine the car owner heard huge screams emanating from the engine compartment and soon turned the engine off. However, the operations supervisor, Ruthie Jesus, who'd been called to assist, discovered that the cat's skin had become fused to the engine and therefore decided that she required the assistance of a veterinarian. They succeeded in removing the Maine Coon, clearly with great difficulty. A video was made of the rescue which can be seen by clicking on this link: Three-hour engine rescue caught on camera ! I can...

80 Maine Coon cats seized from one home. Can you believe it? I can't!

Image
West Hillhurst, Calgary, Alberta, Canada: This is a very peculiar report by CBC from April 2016 . It is no longer news, of course, but it deserves to be looked at. The report states that the Calgary Humane Society seized about 80 Maine Coon cats from a home because they were ill and neglected. They did not know whether this was a "breeding situation" but they were investigating.  Brad Nichols is senior manager of animal cruelty investigations with the Calgary Humane Society. (CBC) At the time they were considering charges. I don't know of any Maine Coon breeder who at any one time has 80 Maine Coon cats in the pipeline as breeding cats or cats to sell. Perhaps it happens but when I go online and look at Maine Coon breeder's websites I see a couple of litters of kittens for sale and perhaps an adult retired breeding cat, something like that, but 80! That sounds very peculiar. I would suggest that they've got it wrong. Perhaps some of the cats were Maine Coons b...

Bromance in the Highlands: William the Scot and Wallace his Maine Coon

Image
This is a cross-post because the story is sweet. It is the story of an abandoned Maine Coon because he was too big, too greedy and too demanding according to his previous 'owner'. Now he is loved. And, yes, he is demanding! Demanding of love and attention.  Bromance in the Highlands: William the Scot and Wallace his Maine Coon.  Photo: Katrina Stewart. Bromance in the Highlands: William the Scot and Wallace his Maine Coon. Photo: Katrina Stewart. He was adopted by William, an ex-military man who lives with Katrina Stewart. She calls herself Kat, an apt name. She takes good photos. It all adds up to a nice package. All the elements are in place and I think the William and Wallace bromance will become big on social media.  At the moment they have a nice Facebook page with over 700 followers but the number is climbing. It will, partly because I have publicised it and they deserve it! I love the way William loves having Wallace on his shoulders or on his head. This cat a...

Are cat rescue organisations hyping up their cats by calling them Maine Coon mix?

Image
If you go to Twitter looking for a Maine Coon cat to adopt you are presented with a series of tweets from rescue organisations advertising what they describe as "Maine Coon mix" cats. On this page is an example of one of those tweets. There is not an ounce, in terms of appearance, of Maine Coon cat in this beautiful rescue cat. You can't tell whether the cat has any Maine Coon genes or chromosomes inside of her. And I would doubt very much that the rescue organisation has any record or knowledge of the fact that this cat is genuinely a Maine Coon mix. To be absolutely clear, the description means that the cat is half Maine Coon and half random bread domestic cat. In other words this cat should be one removed from a purebred cat but how do we know if this is true? Maine Coon mix Lowell but is he a genuine Maine Coon mix? Picture in the public domain. Being a cynical old man, I don't think that it is true. I think rescue organisations are hyping up their cats to make...
