Are Maine Coon cats good with babies?

Image
In general terms Maine Coon cats are probably better than your average domestic cat when it comes to their reaction to a new baby in the home and interactions thereafter. This is because when you buy a Maine Coon you normally know what you are getting in terms of personality whereas with say a rescue random bred cat there is less predictability in respect of character.  Image: MikeB And Maine Coons are considered to have calm and fairly phlegmatic characters. There are many videos of owners showing off their super-large Maine Coon cat to the video camera and the cats take it all in their stride with no wriggling or expression of agitation. By-and-large this is a calm breed of cat which makes them very suited to being good with babies. The reason for this is that Maine Coons are bred through artificial selection. The word 'selection' is the operative one. It means that breeders select foundation cats who have the correct appearance for a Maine Coon as per the breed standard AND ...

How to make life better for the older Maine Coon cat companion (infographic)

Image
Maine Coons in general have shorter lifespans than the domestic cat population because of inherited diseases. Generally, with exceptions, there are more 'disabled' Maine Coons than in the general domestic cat population too because of the same reason. The infographic highlights some pointers that can make things a little better for elderly cats. It is a little strange to me to think that Maine Coons (MCs) become adults later than most domestic cats. I am not sure why but we are told that it might take until the age of 4 to become adult. By that time, they may have a heart murmur due to HCM.  Lifespan And we are also told that their average MC lifespan is around 12.5 years. The average moggie might add another 5 years to that. This is 40% more! Weird. Perhaps the data is slightly inaccurate.  But what is accurate is that MCs will be older earlier than normal in general - there will of course be exceptions. This I think makes the infographic useful. There is another usefulness. ...

Can Maine Coon cats be left alone all day?

Image
No, Maine Coon cats can't be left alone all day, particularly if the cat is confined to the home, perhaps an apartment. However, there are no absolutely right answers . But it would be very poor cat ownership to leave a super Maine Coon home alone daily.  The question is as much about buying a Maine Coon cat as anything else. When you buy any purebred cat, you have to decide whether you can afford to maintain your cat (about £1000 annually) and whether your life is in a position which allows you to be a proper, generous caregiver. Maine Coon at home. Image in public domain as assessed. Not everybody, often through no fault of their own, has a lifestyle which allows them to be a cat caregiver of a decent standard. An important aspect of cat caregiving is being there for them. And having a stable life with a decent home. Domestic cats live in the human world. Often times it is the cat and the human who live in the home and nobody else. From a cat's perspective their human caregiv...

Complaining but compliant huge Maine Coon has his nails trimmed

Image
I think this is in Russia. If not Russia it is in Eastern Europe. Russians breed some amazing Maine Coons. This big ginger male has a big chunky, square muzzle. He is a classic MC. He is very affable but dislikes the experience and politely complains. His human caregiver is clearly very experienced and does a professional job of trimming his nails. Woman trims the nails of a very large Maine Coon who politely complains but who is compliant. Screenshot. Videos like this one sometimes stop working because they are removed at source which is not this site's server. If it has disappeared I am sorry but I have no control over its existence.

Can your Maine Coon hurt your unborn baby if they jump on your lap?

Image
The question is unusual. It is the first time that I have seen it asked. It was asked by Abi Berwager Schreier, an Atlanta-based lifestyle writer for the website Romper. She said: "...since my husband and I are trying to conceive, I started to wonder, can my pet hurt my baby if they jump on my stomach. I don't know if I'm pregnant... Can your Maine Coon hurt your unborn baby if they jump on your lap? Cat lies on pregnant woman -- Photo: Reddit.com. This cat is polydactyl but not a Maine Coon. Maine Coons can be large . Exceptionally, they can be as large as a medium-sized dog judging by the online photographs. Often, they can be about 20 pounds in weight. Abi lives with a Maine Coon mix weighing 17 pounds. She asked whether he could be a problem if and when he jumps up for head butts and some petting. CAN I CUDDLE MY CAT WHEN PREGNANT? She sought the advice of Dr. Yvonne Bohn, OB–GYN at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. And the answer or...

Maine Coon enjoys paddling in a lake

Image
This is a video of a beautiful Maine Coon (calico - tortie-and-white) who is exploring the water in a lake for the first time. His gentle owners apparently wanted him to experience water in this way. I think it's a great idea. You can see him (I am presuminng that this cat is a male for the sake of convenience in writing this article) pawing at the water as if to test it and play with it. The substance is novel to him and he's not quite sure about it. He gingerly goes into the water for the same reason. It's all brand-new to him. His entire life has been spent on dry land and here he is half-immersed in the liquid.  Screenshot from video below It gave me the idea that when Maine Coons play with the water in their water bowls they're doing it because they are interested in it and they're a bit unsure about it as a substance . Yes, they drink it instinctively but as a substance in its own right they are unsure about it and therefore they are testing it and playing wit...
