Maine Coons were the first cats ever to be exhibited at competitive cat shows

Maine coon cat shows predated the first formal cat show of 1871 in London. Desmond Morris in his book Cat World states that "Maine Coon shows had been taking place regularly before either of these". He is referring to both the first formal cat show of 1871 in London and the first North American formal cat show usually given as May 8th 1895 in New York .  "Maine Cat" - winner of America's first cat show in 1895. Picture in public domain. The early Maine Coon show cats look like today's moggies. Therefore, Maine Coons were the first cats ever to be exhibited at competitive cat shows unless the same thing was happening in England with British Shorthairs and there are no reports of that. The Maine Coon cat shows took place regularly from the early 1860s. Farmers in New England held an annual cat show at the Skowhegan Fair. He states that Maine Coon cats were brought from all over the region to compete for the title of "Main State Champion Coon Cat"...

Silver collar given to Maine Coon Cosey in winning first American cat show is at CFA Central Office

This is an interesting snippet of information about the Maine Coon cat. We know that this cat breed originated around the late 1860s when the very first Maine Coons called "Maine cats" or "Coon cats" were exhibited at informal cat shows by farmers in the state of Maine. There was one show, perhaps the only one, I don't know, called the "Maine State Champion Coon Cat". It was held at the local Skowhagen Fair.  Award given to Maine Coon in winning first American cat show pre the Madison Square Garden show of 1895. The award is at the CFA central office. It is a silver collar. Is Cosey wearing it in this photograph? Picture in public domain. The domestic cat ancestors of these Maine cats were the immigrant cats accompanying settlers from Europe in the 1600s. They landed at Maine. And it's is probably fair to say that the first major cat show held at Madison Square Garden in New York City was duly won by a female brown tabby whose name was Cosey. S...

First American Maine Coon Show Cat?

The books refer to a Maine Coon cat that appears to have been shown at American cat shows as early as 1861. I don't think this is correct because the first cat show in England was in 1871 as far as I am aware and the cat fancy in the USA was a little behind that of the UK. If anyone can clarify by leaving a comment it would be most welcome. Update: I think the truth lies between these two points. There were farm shows at which purebred cats or domestic cats generally were shown perhaps by the farmer's wife. This is where early Maine Coon cats could have been shown. Anyway the books do record a Maine Coon called "Captain Jenks of the Horse Marines" (big and grand name, don't you think? But Maine Coons are big and grand!). He was a black and white Maine Coon cat. The name incidentally is after a music hall song of the mid-1800s. He is said to have been "owned" by the brother of Mr FR Pierce and Mr Pierce himself who wrote the book, The Book of the Cat...
