Can a Maine Coon kill a dog?

Image
Theoretically, the answer to the question is yes but please read on and contribute if you'd like to. This is a general discussion because the question demands it. People are asking the question in the title online so I'd better answer it even though to be brutally frank it is a poor question. The first point to make is that the question is based on the premise that all Maine Coons are the same size as the huge individuals we see on the internet and they are not. Image: MikeB The classic Maine Coon as per the breed standard are bigger than the average domestic cat and the biggest domestic cat breed but they are not *that* big. The Maine Coon show cats might disappoint the people who've see the social media monster Maine Coons. Imagination So, you should not visualize Maine Coons the size of a bobcat attacking and devouring a dog belonging to one of the toy dog breeds such as the Pug or Pomeranian! I don't think you were visualizing it actually 😉😎. The Maine Coon is big...

Can Maine Coons be 'guard cats'?

Image
This might sound a little frivolous, perhaps even stupid please hear me out. We know about guard dogs. In developing countries, a lot of people keep dogs as guard dogs. It may be the main reason why they have a dog.  Guard dogs are also popular in developed countries. Dogs are favoured over cats in this role because they (1) are servants of their master, the pack leader and alpha dog, the human caregiver and (2) they are generally larger and stronger than domestic cats. The dog has an instinct to bark at the door when a stranger arrives as they presume it to be a hostile invader of their pack.  Subject to a few extra conditions, I can see both points 1 and 2 being overturned by the Maine Coon!  Warning: Guard Cat. Image: MikeB We all know that the domestic cat, including the Maine Coon is not a pack animal. They won't defend the group of which they are a member. However, regarding the Maine Coon character I can defer to my favorite reference, Gloria Stephens (Legacy of th...

Male Maine Coon loves my female Maine Coon and he defended her by attacking me, the owner

Image
Image: MikeB The words of the title come from social media. It is written in the first person. I'll recite the story in the third person. This is a story about a woman who lives with two Maine Coon cats. One is a female tortoiseshell who has 'catitude'. I think you know what I mean by that. Tortoiseshell cats are known to have a certain personality which is independent-minded. They know their own mind and will do their own thing. It is a slightly obstreperous attitude but I think a very nice one as well. And the other Maine Coon cat that this woman lives with is a male. If he gets too close to his female 'friend' (love) she attacks him but he never fights back. He just sits up on his hind legs with his front legs up in the air as if about to box. He is a sweet boy in the long tradition of sweet boy Maine Coons! And I think he loves and accepts her cantankerous personality. He may even like her character. On one occasion the woman was leaving her home to take the fem...

Can a Maine Coon kill a person?

Image
Can a Maine Coon kill a person? Under extreme circumstances the answer is yes due to a bite infection but I don't think it has ever happened! Image: DALLE-E Because of the imposing size of some of the Maine Coons that we see on the internet - which do not really represent the general Maine Coon population - some people are genuinely unsure if they'll be safe around one of these impressive cats. This is an extreme viewpoint and many will consider it quite mad. It's not. But fear not because it is highly unlikely for a Maine Coon to kill a person. Maine Coons are domesticated cats that have a friendly and affectionate nature. They are not aggressive towards humans and are known to be great companions. Maine Coons are large cats, with males weighing up to 18 pounds, but their size alone does not make them dangerous to humans. While Maine Coons are powerful animals with sharp claws and teeth, they are not likely to attack humans unprovoked (c.f. defensive aggression). Like any ...

Neighbour's Maine Coon cats are attacking my small rescue cats. What to do?

Image
The problem described in the title posted on the mumsnet.com website is one which occurred in the countryside in the UK. The owner of more than one Maine Coon cat allows them outside because she feels that they are safe to wander the countryside. That's fairly rare. Maine Coon outside. Image in the public. I modified it by changing the background. RELATED:  Are citrus fruits a good cat deterrent ? And even though they are several hundred yards away from her neighbour, they do come onto her property and scare her relatively small rescue cats and on one occasion one of them physically attacked one of them. She wants advice on how to deal with it. My response is below, and this is the same as the response on the mumsnet.com website. The problem that you are encountering is really to do with humans trying to manage and control feline society which is very difficult. Legally, domestic cats can trespass on a neighbour's property as trespass doesn't apply to cats. Also, it seems t...
