Maine Coon shot with an airgun causing life-threatening injuries

Image
NEWS AND COMMENT: This comes from the UK, specifically the town of Exning, Suffolk. A lady who lives there, Julie Boucher, has a beautiful tabby Maine Coon cat called Kanji. He weighs 7.5 kg which is about 16 pounds. Kanji. Photo: Julie Boucher One day he became seriously unwell. It said that he "managed to return home". This clearly implies that he was allowed outside to roam around freely, unsupervised. That's okay if you are okay with it but some people would disagree with allowing a large Maine Coon cat outside unsupervised and it's been proved true in this instance. As mentioned Kanji became mysteriously ill. They checked him and couldn't find anything wrong with him. Boucher took him to the vet who checked him over and they couldn't find anything wrong with him either. A few days later he was more poorly and Boucher thought that he might be dying. She rushed back to the veterinarian who re-inspected him and decided to operate and they found a pellet insi...

Your Maine Coon might help solve crime

Image
This thought applies to all domestic cats in homes including Maine Coons, currently in the top 3 most popular cat breeds.  Forensic researchers at Flinders University in Australia and Victoria Police Forensic Services Department believe that a criminal's DNA might be on the household's domestic cat companion. Your Maine Coon might help solve crime. Image: MikeB. DNA can be transferred to cats. And nowadays DNA plays a very important role is catching criminals. The researchers say that there is a "lack of data on companion animals such as cats and dogs in their relationship to human DNA transfer." The researcher's co-author Heidi Monkman said: "These companion animals can be highly relevant in assessing the presence and activities of the inhabitants of the household, or any recent visitors to the scene." 20 cats participated in the research from 15 different homes and with the owners all having different levels of interactions with their cats. DNA samples...

Maine Coon among the most commonly stolen cats in Britain

Image
The Maine Coon is among the cat breeds most commonly stolen in Britain (Daily Express). The others are: Bengal, Siamese and of course the non-purebred moggy.  Magical Maine Coon queens of Norway. Moody...looking and feeling like snowy Norway. Photo:  Instagram. Maine Coon allowed outside unsupervised. Possibility of theft? Perhaps not. Increase in thefts In Britain, in 2021, there has been a 12.3% rise in cat thefts since the beginning of the year to April. There has been a threefold increase in the past five years. The Mail Online reports that up to 360,000 cats have been stolen in a year in the UK! That is a staggering figure. Although the Maine Coon is one of the favourites to be stolen, of the purebred cats, the Bengal is top of the list for thieves. The reason might be because the Bengal cat stands out more than the Maine Coon and therefore is more of a target. Over the past two years, there has been a 40% increase in thefts of cats in the UK. Less than 20% o...

Maine Coon Singapore Facebook administrator sold 2 cats from a breeder for S$400 commission

Image
NEWS AND COMMENT: Although, the detail in the story is a little bit thin, it is an interesting one. It concerns the administrator Derek Chew Keng Khoon, 45,  of a Facebook page called Maine Coon Singapore. It's a kind of meeting place for Singapore citizens who live with a Maine Coon. It also appears to be a place where some people visit for the purposes of trying to purchase a Maine Coon. As I understand it, it is against Facebook policy to sell cats on their website. Maine Coon Singapore Facebook administrator sold 2 cats from a breeder on S$400 commission Khoon is accused by the Singaporean authorities of using his flat as a pet shop to sell two kittens. I will presume that these kittens were Maine Coons. His name, incidentally, is very apt, I think you will agree. Maybe that's partly why he loves Maine Coon cats. He faces three criminal charges in Singapore: two of them concern using his flat as a shop to sell to kittens between January 5, 2020 and February 29, 2020 with...

Northern Ireland Maine Coon partially blinded by a shotgun blast

Image
NORTHERN IRELAND - NEWS AND COMMENT: Although the story is not hot off the press it is news nonetheless and it does tell us how vulnerable domestic cats are to spontaneous acts of violence, often by young men. In this instance the event occurred in Halfgayne Road in Maghera, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland.  Maine Coon Leo before being shot and partially blinded  by a shotgun blast. Photo. Maureen. Maureen Newman's Maine Coon, whose name is Leo was with his owner on their property. Leo climbed along the garage roof. It appears that he was visible from the road because somebody, using a shotgun, blasted at Leo. He staggered to safety behind the garage wall where he became trapped. He spent several hours in the same spot in severe pain as Maureen tried to entice him out of his hiding. She said that it was about 8:15pm on Saturday night after she had just fed her cat with some treats when he was shot. They were outside at the aviary with her dog a King Charles spaniel who...

Ginger tabby Maine Coon with huge plumed tail outside on leash

Image
This is a picture of a very impressive Maine Coon cat with a ginger tabby coat, a huge, plumed tail who is enjoying the outside on a leash. It is nice to see such a handsome cat on a leash outside the home. It is the only way such a cat could safely enjoy the outside so this photograph ticks all the boxes. This appears to be a backyard (garden). Ginger tabby Maine Coon with huge plumed tail outside on leash. Photo: Twitter. The most noticeable feature is of, course, the tail and Maine Coons are meant to have tails just like this one: long fur, flowing or in the language of cat breeders "plumed". A tail like this is part of the breed standard and all good cat breeders will aspire to this sort of appearance. It is one of the special features of this breed as is the square muzzle and the large ears which are lynx tipped. The fur should be shaggy (TICA) and there should be lots of tufts of hair sticking out between the toes! I don't know how many try to take their cat outs...

CRAVEN DISTRICT OF NORTH YORKSHIRE, UK - NEWS AND VIEWS: Norman is an 18-month-old Maine Coon. He went outside on Saturday morning and returned 27 hours later on Sunday. Yes, he had 25 pellets inside him some of them were quite deep and too difficult to remove. Norman and X-ray. Photo (left) Josie Simpson. Right: veterinarian's X-ray. He couldn't walk properly and couldn't move his tail. They rushed him to the veterinary clinic. He was x-rayed and the 25 lead pellets were seen inside him. Josie Simpson is shocked and devastated. Maine Coon shot with airgun almost died

Image
NEWS AND OPINION : Kanji is a typically large Maine Coon Living in Suffolk, England, UK. He was allowed outside and was shot when wandering around the neighbourhood. The interesting and troubling aspect of this story is that his owner, Mrs Boucher, couldn't see anything wrong with him. He was just unwell so she took him to the vet. They discovered that an airgun pellet had been shot into his stomach area. It had torn through Kanji's stomach wall and bowel. He needed life-saving emergency surgery and plenty of antibiotics to kill off a subsequent bacterial infection. Kanji a large Maine Coon was shot with an airgun while wandering around outside the home in the UK. Photo: Mrs Boucher. It took a couple of visits to the veterinarian to find out the problem. On the first visit the vet couldn't find the cause of Kanji's poor health. He has fully or almost fully recovered it seems but he spent several days at the surgery because of the infection.
