Are cat rescue organisations hyping up their cats by calling them Maine Coon mix?

Image
If you go to Twitter looking for a Maine Coon cat to adopt you are presented with a series of tweets from rescue organisations advertising what they describe as "Maine Coon mix" cats. On this page is an example of one of those tweets. There is not an ounce, in terms of appearance, of Maine Coon cat in this beautiful rescue cat. You can't tell whether the cat has any Maine Coon genes or chromosomes inside of her. And I would doubt very much that the rescue organisation has any record or knowledge of the fact that this cat is genuinely a Maine Coon mix. To be absolutely clear, the description means that the cat is half Maine Coon and half random bread domestic cat. In other words this cat should be one removed from a purebred cat but how do we know if this is true? Maine Coon mix Lowell but is he a genuine Maine Coon mix? Picture in the public domain. Being a cynical old man, I don't think that it is true. I think rescue organisations are hyping up their cats to make...

Singapore Maine Coon cat owner dies. Rush to adopt their 5 cats through pet store

Image
This is an unusual story from Singapore. Five Maine coon cats are up for adoption through what appears to be a pet shop because their owner passed away. The owner has remained anonymous but he or she was a regular customer of a local pet store SGPetShop. The deceased person entrusted the store with their cats to rehome them. The store appears to be doing a thorough job in rehoming and have advertised the situation on Facebook using their Facebook page. There's been a bit of a rush of applicants in comments. The Maine Coon cats are aged between one to three years. The adoption fee is 450 Singaporean dollars. The pet store is being quite careful in vetting the adopters. Once vetted they will be notified. This post may be historic in that I would expect the vetting process to be carried out quite quickly. The person died in late January as I understand it. 450 Singaporean dollars is the equivalent of US$337. Some people have questioned whether the adoption fee is too high but i...

Maine Coon Rescue New York

There are two main sources of Maine Coon rescue in New York and both are affiliated to or work through major rescue websites: Petfinder ( Maine Coon Rescue ) and Adopt a Pet ( Maine Coon rescue on this site ). The big thing about these Maine Coon rescue sites is that nearly all the cats are Maine Coon mix. They are described as this. I am not convinced that some are even that! They look like long haired moggies to me. How can you tell what a Maine Coon mix is? And exactly what is a Maine Coon mix? They are random bred cats in fact. Great cats yes but not purebred Maine Coons. There are some - a few - purebred Maine Coons on these sites but even then the rescue center says that they cannot guarantee that they are purebred. Are there papers to establish that? Not sure. I'd watch out for that. [ Note: moggies are at least as good as purebred cats. They are probably more inherently healthy as they come from a wider gene pool. But if you would like to adopt a real Maine Coon th...

Maine Coon Cat Rescue

Tootsie a rescued purebred Maine Coon - Photo copyright Valley Girl The photo on this page is protected by copyright ©. Violations of copyright are reported to Google.com (DMCA). As I have quite a comprehensive page on Maine Coon cat rescue I won't go over the same ground here. This is the page . It contains general information about Maine Coons as well. One thing to be aware of is that there are many Maine Coon mix cats that are waiting to be rescued. These are not purebred cats but equally valuable (in a general sense not a monetary sense) and as nice. But if your want to acquire a purebred make enquiries and read the small print. It is possible to adopt a fantastic purebred cat through the rescue process. Valley Girl is one person who did when she adopted Tootsie . See photo heading this post. Tootsie is polydactyl as are many Maine Coons.
