Fluffy cream tabby Maine Coon with whisker tendrils

Image
I cannot shake off the thought that this glamorous cream-coloured Maine Coon is female but perhaps I am stereotyping. It's just the colour and the fluffiness of the coat and the tendril whiskers which lead me down that route. Cream tabby Maine Coon. Photo: Pinterest. This is a very beautiful Maine Coon. The coat is not white but, as stated, cream-coloured. I don't think that that is an official colour under the breed standard for this cat. Let me check. Well, I'm wrong. I have just checked the CFA breed standard and it states that one of the solid colours is cream and it is described as " one level shade of buff cream, without markings. Sound to the roots. Nose leather and paw pads: pink." Although looking more carefully she has faint tabby markings (see the forehead). This super-looker may be a cream tabby which is one of the many colours and coat types of this cat breed. The 'cream tabby' is described as "classic, mackerel, ticked: ground colour ...

A cracker of a cat. A beauty. Picture of a beautiful brown tabby Maine Coon. Photo: Pinterest and in the public domain. Brown tabbies are arguably the best Maine Coons reminding us of their origins as barn cats in Maine, USA. I have a full page on the tabby cat coat if you're interested -  click here to read it. This cat is not bred to extreme to be interesting and impressive which is much better. This is a nice well-rounded cat of reasonable proportions fitting the breed standard.

Do Maine Coon cats shed and can it be prevented and reduced?

Image
To the first part of the question the answer is Yes. To the second part of the question the answer is No. To the third part the answer is Yes, by grooming your cat which will thin out the fur and take away some of the fur that would have been shed naturally by the cat. I guess you know that already. Maine Coon cats are just like any other and that they will shed fur.  Maine Coons shed fur like any other so grooming your cat should be a daily ritual that you both enjoy and which will improve the bond. The Maine Coon is a medium-longhaired cat and perhaps it is fair to say that cats with this hair length tend to shed more or the shedding is more apparent because the hair is longer! That sounds a bit daft but I think it's true. Glorious Maine Coon photographed with a ring flash - look at the reflection in the eyes. Picture in the public domain. It shouldn't be a problem to groom your cat because they normally love it provided it is done with gentleness and plenty of love. In fa...

Cute Maine Coon Kitten

Image
This is a nice photograph of a grey tabby and white Maine Coon kitten taken by Flickr photographer;  VirtKitty . Maine Coon Kitten What do I see? I guess what is most noticeable at this young age is what cat fanciers call, "ear furnishings". Ear hair to you and me. One of the distinctive features of the Maine Coon is the tuft of hair that comes out of the ear flap (the external part of the ear). You can see the beginnings of some great ear furnishings! In this photo he is 8 weeks old. Thanks for letting me publish the photo.

Italian Maine Coon at Show

Image
Maine Coon , a photo by lo.tangelini on Flickr. This is a very interesting looking Italian Maine Coon cat. She (I think the cat is female) looks quite stocky, which is unusual. Although this could be due to the sitting position. Maine Coons are more long and rangy than stocky (cobby in cat fancy language). I am presuming the cat is Italian as she is at an Italian cat show. Sometimes, however you get international visitors. She is red and white tabby . She looks very serious and quite regal. I think she is used to being at cat shows. She has great ear tufts coming from the tips of her ears and you can see that typically there is lots of fur around the toes. She has the classic ruff too. A sort of Maine Coon mane!

Brown Tabby and White Maine Coon

Image
The tabby Maine Coon is probably the most popular. The cat above is a brown tabby and white Maine Coon.  The cat is a European Maine Coon. The coat looks diluted brown to me. This is one of my favorite colours and patterns for this breed of cat. See an article about tabby and white cats in general. Maine Coons can be bred to a wide range of colours and patterns . This is dictated by the cat associations.
