What are Maine Coon ear furnishings?

Image
It sounds as if interior decoration is being discussed. 'Furnishings' normally means the furniture, fittings, and other decorative accessories such as curtains and carpets, for a house or room.  But in the great family of cat fanciers, it means ear hair 😊 and Maine Coons have lots of it. Sticking out of the top of the ear (lynx tips) or sprouting from inside the ear and fanning out like water sprinklers on a football pitch. Cat fanciers love it. I like it too but I find it strange because for humans it is the opposite. Men ask their barber to shave the inside of the ear to remove their ear hair. Well, the barber asks first and the client always says 'yes'. After all ear hair is unattractive 😎. So why is it attractive when it is on domestic cats? Maine Coon ear furnishings. Image by MikeB Well, I can think of one reason but there might be others. Cats are covered in fur, millions of hair strands. How many hair strands are there on a domestic cat? I tried to count them ...

Why do Maine Coons have ear tufts?

Image
I have seen some very misleading articles on this from leading websites including Maine Coon Central. 'Ear tufts' refer to the long, stiff hair strands that sprout from the tip of the ear flap. It is hair outside the ear flap and therefore plays no part in preventing dirt and debris from entering the ear canal as stated by Maine Coon Central.  Fantastic ear tufts on a young ginger tabby and white Maine Coon. Photo: Facebook (believed). Debris is stopped by what the cat fancy call 'ear furnishings' which is the hair inside the ear flap.  Ear tufts are purely decorative for the domestic cat and the Maine Coon. All domestic cats have ear tufts but for nearly all of them they are very slight and hardly visible sometimes. So why do Maine Coons have enlarged ear tufts? It is because the breed standard insists on them. Here is the CFA breed standard: EARS : Shape: large, well-tufted, wide at base, tapering to appear pointed. Set: approximately one ear’s width apart at the base...

Maine coon 'ear furnishings' - pinnae should be well-tufted

Image
The description: "ear furnishings" is a cat fancy phrase. It is a bit strange. It refers to the hair in the ear and on the tip of the ear flap (the external part of the ear called the pinna). Ear furnishings are frequently mentioned in breed standards where they demand that the ears of Maine Coons are 'well tufted'. Breed standards are guidelines set down by the various cat associations on the way the particular cat breed should look when being shown at cat shows - competitions about the appearance and secondarily the temperament of the cat. Maine Coon kitten with whopping ear furnishings

Image
What the hell are 'ear furnishings'? One of the features that a Maine Coon (MC) should have if they are bred to be in line with the CFA breed standard is well developed ear furnishings. I've used the phrase "ear furnishings" because that is the sort of phrase we hear in the cat fancy. Of course, I'm not referring to sofas and armchairs in a person's home. I'm specifically referring to the long hair inside the ear flap of this highly popular cat companion. But ear furnishings also applies to the tufts of hair sticking out of the tops of the ear flaps - these are lynx tipped ears. Maine Coon kitten with whopping ear furnishings. Screenshot. It's remarkable in some ways that the MC breed standard demands that the cat has hairy ears! That is what it comes down to. All men have their ear hair trimmed and removed whereas Maine Coon breeders use their best efforts to achieve the opposite. The CFA breed standard with respect to ears states: Shape: large...

Black Maine Coon with extravagant lynx tipped ears

Image
Black Maine Coon with extravagant lynx tipped ears Picture in the public domain in my view. The cat breeders call them "ear furnishings" which sounds as if you are furnishing your home with items of furniture. I refer to them as "lynx tipped ears" because they follow the anatomy of the wild cat species known as the"lynx". The best known of the lynx family of cats is the Canada lynx . Of course, the reason why these ear furnishings are so obvious in this black cat is because they are black. They stand out in sharp contrast to the lighter background. They make the ears look large and pointed which is not too bad a thing for a Maine Coon because the breed standard states that the ear should be: "large, well-tufted, wide at base, tapering to appear pointed". This is the CFA breed standard for MC ears.

British Maine Coon Does Not Need To Have Ear Tufts

One of the defining physical characteristics of the Maine Coon are the ear tufts , the long hair that grows out from the tip of each ear to make the ears look larger and give then a more triangular appearance. Ear tufts are enshrined in the American cat association breed standards. There is actual mention of ear tufts - EARS: Shape: large, well-tufted . Surprisingly (for me at least!) there is no mention in the British "standard of points" which is the UK equivalent of the breed standard . This is what it states: "Ears - Large, tall ears, wide at base and tapering to appear pointed at the tip; set high but well apart." No mention of "tufts" but there is mention of the ears appearing pointed at the tip, which is an oblique reference to ear tufts so why can't the Brits be more precise and actually refer to the hair! It would have been better. My recommendation to the GCCF (the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy - the premier cat association in th...

Maine Coon Eye Colors

Image
A cat association breed standard dictates what eye color is acceptable for the Maine Coon purebred cat. So, I'll have to quote a breed standard. The International Cat Association (TICA), one of the big players, says this: "Color: Any shade of green and/or gold. No relationship to coat color. Blue and odd-eyes accepted in whites and particolors.". The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA), said to be the world's largest cat association has a very similar breed standard with respect to eye color . We should be seeing green and/or gold eyes with what I consider the best coat, the tabby and white, for this cat. Let's look for a picture of a tabby Maine Coon and see if the eyes meet the breed standard. Shaggy Maine Coon

Image
I spy a Maine Coon , a photo by rbstijl on Flickr. The Maine Coon fur is shaggy. It is not meant to be too neat and tidy I think. The International Cat Association like the slightly untidy appearance. The fur is not of an even length. It looks more natural. This nice photograph sort of show off that shaggy haired look. You can also see the great ear hair of a Maine Coon. They are famous for their ear hair sprouting out and those glorious lynx tips, the hair growing out from the tip of the ear making them look more pointed and larger. I think this is a white Maine Coon.

Silver Tabby and White Maine Coon Cat

Image
Maine coon cat , a photo by fox_kiyo on Flickr. This is the first time I have seen this cat. The photo is directly from Flickr so I have no control as to whether it is deleted at source or not. The cat looks female and she looks pretty. She has no ear tufts - fur at the tip of her ears. I like tufts of of hair at the tips of the Maine Coon ears. They are well known for them! The eyes are orange/copper colored. The eye color need not bear any relationship to the coat color under the breed standard . I am not sure what she is wearing. I think the photographer is from Japan. I presume therefore that the cat lives in Japan. Japan has a decent cat fancy. Helmi Flick was once invited to take photographs there at a cat show. She lives in the USA.
