Maine Coons are "touch-sensitive" and can respond with owner-directed aggression

Image
Nothing better than seeing a Maine Coon on a lead in a public place. Image: in the public domain as assessed. Please read the article careful to get the true meaning. Thanks. The headline to this article is based on a study I have used to prepare an article on cat breed personality ( click this to read that article ). It is a good study which also refers to previous studies. In it the scientists refer to the Maine Coon. I'll quote what they say about the Maine Coon: "In previous studies, Maine Coon [11,19,47] and Burmese [19] have been ranked among the breeds showing the most touch sensitivity/owner-directed aggression, and they also scored high in our study." The numbers are references to earlier studies. Ignore those. But what they say is interesting and I have not seen this kind of language before in describing the character of the Maine Coon. Before I discuss it I should say that anyone reading a scientific study should exercise a bit of caution because not all of wha...

How can I become my new Maine Coon kitten's "person?"

Image
Maine Coon kitten. Not the kitten referred to in the article. Image: MikeB The person who asked the question in the title on social media also said: "All of our other cats love my girlfriend more, so when I bought our new Maine Coon, I really wanted to finally have a pet that loved me the most. What are some tips to becoming my Maine Coon's bestest friend?" My response was: " Create a bond through a lot of gentle, loving interactions in which you do things that your cat really likes. You'll learn what they like. And plenty of play because they'll like it and it is an interaction between human and cat. Let them share the bed at night and your lap during daytime (if they are a lap cat). Find out their favorite food treats and give them, the same time and the same place to create a routine. He'll ask. Plenty of TLC - tender loving care delivered consistently. Talk to him melodiously (quiet, pleasant voice) and pet him gently and in a way that he likes. Don...

I need advice. My Maine Coon is NOT friendly

Image
There is an old post on the Reddit.com website with the title: I Need Help/Advice. My Maine Coon Is NOT Friendly. The owner wants help to try and figure out why her neutered male cat behaves as he does. He’ll sleep with me sometimes at night and tolerate petting, but does not like to be held, and turns to bite if you pet him “too much”. (Which is often 2-3 pets) She says that he came from a breeder whose other Maine Coons (MCs) are friendlier.  The way I see it is that the overarching character trait of the Maine Coon is perhaps not - in general - as 'lovey' and accepting of petting as some other cat breeds. And I always refer to Gloria Stephens who was or still is a cat show judge, Maine Coon owner and author ( Legacy of the Cat ). She has firsthand experience and lots of experience on the character of the MC. She's clear on the MC character: They do not constantly demand attention, preferring to hang out with their owners. They do not necessarily want to be held, but they...

Do Maine Coons like to cuddle?

Image
Yes, Maine Coons like to cuddle. Just like any other domestic cat they like to be petted as an expression of your love for them. Perhaps some people think that Maine Coons are a different species of cat than the regular domestic cat, but they are not. They look different, they look majestic especially when they are one of those very large individuals , but in their heads, they are just the same as any neglected, downtrodden and forgotten moggy. Maine Coons are meant to with humans, in the human world. That's their role but go easy and respect the cat. Sweet female Maine Coon likes to be cuddled. Photo: Pixabay. Of course, it depends on how you cuddle your Maine Coon and where you cuddle her and for how long you do it. It depends on who initiates it and it also depends, to a certain degree, on the personality of the individual Maine Coon concerned. You can't say that they are all exactly the same as if they have been cloned or stamped out on the factory floor. Some Maine Coon...
