Are Maine Coon cats good with babies?

Image
In general terms Maine Coon cats are probably better than your average domestic cat when it comes to their reaction to a new baby in the home and interactions thereafter. This is because when you buy a Maine Coon you normally know what you are getting in terms of personality whereas with say a rescue random bred cat there is less predictability in respect of character.  Image: MikeB And Maine Coons are considered to have calm and fairly phlegmatic characters. There are many videos of owners showing off their super-large Maine Coon cat to the video camera and the cats take it all in their stride with no wriggling or expression of agitation. By-and-large this is a calm breed of cat which makes them very suited to being good with babies. The reason for this is that Maine Coons are bred through artificial selection. The word 'selection' is the operative one. It means that breeders select foundation cats who have the correct appearance for a Maine Coon as per the breed standard AND ...

Maine Coon and 2 Malamutes adjust to the presence of a baby in their lives

Image
Milo, a Maine Coon, and 2 Malamutes have adjusted in their own ways to a different way of life because a new baby has been introduced into their home and the family. The humans call the family their 'pack'. They are referring to a pack of dogs or wolves and I guess that when you introduce a baby into the home there is a potential to disturb the pack which is why the leaders (alpha dogs) i.e. the humans, are happy that it has worked out well. "Milo, the cat, he was petrified." Milo, the Maine Coon, was the last to get on board. He was initially fearful of the new baby whereas Nikko was very keen to get involved. He was inquisitive and keen to sniff and look at the new baby. The other Malamute (I've forgotten their name) was also pretty keen. Firstly, having read some horrendous stories of dogs attacking babies, I'm always a little bit edgy when I see large dogs around small babies but these parents are very organised and I am sure that they know what they ar...

Picture of silver tabby Maine Coon and baby's head

This is a cat photograph which caught my eye because it brings out that question about whether allowing domestic cats to sleep with babies is a good idea. In this example we have what I believe is a silver tabby Maine Coon living with the Reddit.com user u/breaker_h , who took the photograph. I have read quite a lot about cats and babies and recently I wrote an article about whether a Maine Coon jumping onto a pregnant woman is dangerous . Picture of silver tabby Maine Coon and baby's head. Credit as per para above the picture. My personal conclusion is that domestic cats can benefit the health of babies. Parents shouldn't be worried about cat sleeping near to babies provided they are supervised until you feel confident enough about the arrangement. Domestic cats like the smell of babies, that is obvious. They seem to instinctively realise that it is a little human even when they're very small. They don't treat babies as hostile aliens invading their space. I guess ...
