Fictional 'Maine Coon mix' cats at Petfinder to encourage adoptions

Image
This article should be a warning (if it is needed) to first-time adopters who are looking for a Maine Coon cat at a discount price. You won't find one unless you are very lucky with one at a Maine Coon cat club for instance. Petfinder If you search for a Maine Coon to adopt on Petfinder.com they present 604 cats ready and waiting for adoption (at late March 2023)! Clearly, they cannot all be purebred Maine Coons. I didn't have the time to check all of the candidates but the first half dozen were all Maine Coon mix cats according to Petfinder.com. Maine Coon mix cats on Petfinder. Screenshot. But they simply are not. These are all random bred cats. They are moggies. And they are beautiful and very adoptable moggies but they there is no Maine Coon DNA in them.  I'd expect all 604 cats to me moggies and mislabelled as Maine Coon mixes. Warning to adopters People wanting to adopt a Maine Coon but can't really afford the purchase price should be aware that the Petfinder Main...

Any chance he’s got Maine Coon or Savannah in him? He’s 15 lbs!

Image
This social media user asks the following: " Picked up this guy as a kitten and he never stopped growing, he just turned 1! I’m 6 foot 2 for reference. Any chance he’s got Maine coon or savannah in him? He’s 15 lbs!" Those were his words. Sorry for the lower-case spellings which are incorrect. It is natural to ask but if you have to ask, he isn't purebred. Any chance he’s got Maine coon or Savannah in him? He’s 15 lbs! No. Image: u/Bid325 on Reddit.com A lot of people ask if their cat is a purebred cat. Sometimes they ask if their cat is a purebred-mix cat. The latter is a moggie anyway so not much point in asking that question. This applies to this guy incidentally and in any case, he is holding up (in the wrong way 😒😉) a ginger tabby male cat of random bred origin which means a moggie to you and me.  No criticism intended. I feel that they have a good relationship. His cat looks like a moggie too. And I love moggies. They are the best cats in fact. Some random bred c...

Don't buy a Maine Coon cat on Gumtree

Image
I am just skimming through Maine Coon cats for sale on the UK Gumtree website while typing this to see what people are trying to sell to the public and the result is frankly shocking. There is no attempt to reassure the owner that the supposed Maine Coon cat has a pedigree and is registered with a cat Association. There is nothing to suggest that these cats are genuine, purebred Maine Coons.  The first one is definitely not a Maine Coon and looks like a regular brown tabby (see advert below). The seller is asking £200 for a quick sale. They want a quick sale because they are not selling a Maine Coon cat. I would bet my bottom dollar that this is a misrepresentation and the seller wants to make a fast buck in selling a random bred cat. The seller's grasp of the English language is very poor. I don't know whether this indicates that this person is not British and is perhaps an immigrant to the country. Thais is a possibility but I don't know. Here is part of the advert: Don...

Are there any genuine Maine Coons at "Maine Coon Rescue" organisations?

Image
I have just visited several online Maine Coon rescue organisations. They are charities run by volunteers and they are meant to be adopting out Maine Coon cats judging by the names of their charities. But when you visit these websites, you immediately notice that the cats advertised for adoption are either Maine Coon mix cats or they cannot vouch for the pedigree of the cats advertised for adoption. Or they are clearly random bred (mixed breed) cats as seen below. Maine Coon mix at a Maine Coon cat rescue organisation online. A nice tabby moggie. By all means adopt the cat. You'll do well to but don't think you are adopting anything other than a tabby moggie. The rescue organisations are being less than honest. I don't want to be mean-spirited or in any way undermine these cat rescue charities. They do great work. However, if a cat rescue organisation is advertising rescued Maine Coon cats for adoption, you expect them to be listing purebred Maine Coon cats. But they aren...

Can Maine Coons breed with regular cats?

Image
Some people want to know whether Maine Coons can mate with any other domestic cat including random-bred domestic cats and, of course, the answer is a very positive Yes, biologically speaking. This is because the Maine Coon is itself a domestic cat with exactly the same DNA as any other moggy. There is absolutely no biological barrier to this glamorous purebred cat mating with any other domestic cat. Image: MikeB. However, that said, you don't want to do it because the offspring will not be Maine Coon cats. They will be hybrids which are euphemistically called 'Maine Coon mix' cats. In short, these are moggies because the purebred cats have to be purebred and registered with a cat association and have a pedigree. What's the point of mating a Maine Coon with a moggy? And, my argument is positively supported by the major cat associations because their breed standards do not permit what they call "outcrosses". Below is a screenshot from the be standard of The Inte...
