Do Maine Coon sometimes eat their own poop?

Image
The question is almost insulting!! For the regal Maine Coon to suggest that they might stoop so low is insulting. But there is a serious side to this. It seems that kittens sometimes eat their own poop. This applies to any cat of any cat breed or moggy. No reference in my books The first point is that in all my reading about cats in a large number of books over many years I can't recall encountering any references to cats or kitten eating their own poop. Perhaps I have ten years ago or something but it's a very rarely encountered topic. Internet - reliable? But you can quickly find references to it on the internet. Strange that. I feel that the habit of eating poop called 'coprophagia' is rare in kittens and cats. It must be rare to very rare. Some internet articles imply that it is common among kittens. I don't believe it. The Internet authors have a habit of writing clickbait and exaggerating. I am not saying that they have exaggerated in this instance but it is c...

Cleaning up poop matting for Maine Coons? Shampoo recommendation?

Image
On my personal mini-survey poop (and sometimes pee) stuck on the fur around the bum of a Maine Coon is a fairly if not a very common problem ( click this link to see what I had to say about it a little while ago ). Grooming Maine Coons around the bottom is not uncommon either. It is a proactive measure to stop poop sticking to those pesky hairs which is annoyingly messy to clear up. Obviously, it needs to be done with great caution perhaps professionally it you know of a good groomer. Be careful with groomers as things can go wrong. Available on Amazon where it have received over 8,000 reviews at 4.5 which is about as good as it gets. Picture: Amazon. It is sad that this majestic domestic cat is so burdened with such a mundane and unpleasant problem.  One Maine Coon owner on the social media site Reddit.com asked in despair for advice about a good neutral shampoo to help with the clean-up. By 'neutral' I mean and he means a neutral pH, not too alkaline (high pH) in order to avo...

How to keep a Maine Coon cat clean - poop on butt problems

Image
Social media users are asking the question how to keep their Maine Coon clean? And what they are referring to is not keeping the whole cat clean because they can do that for themselves by and large. What they are referring to is poop stuck to their cat's backside. This appears to be a problem with Maine Coon cats. It is certainly not uncommon . There are several things that can be tried to alleviate if not eliminate the problem. Please read on. There are some useful links to information about litter trays/boxes and substrate which may help. This Maine Coon has difficulty in keeping his butt clean. Image: Reddit.com. The owner asks how he/she can keep him/her clean. Interesting aspect of the question Normally domestic cats are fastidious about keeping themselves clean including their bottoms. If they can't it can only be because the problem overwhelms them and they need intervention. Initial question It seems to me that you have to ask yourself an initial question. It is my Main...

How common is poop stuck to Maine Coon butt fur?

How often do Maine Coon cat owners have to deal with poop stuck to their fur? Faeces stuck to the fur on the backside of a Maine Coon cat appears to be an issue which is not talked about much, but I have bumped into it on a social media website and would therefore like to mention it here. Ideally, I'd like to hear from people living with Maine Coons and other longhaired cats too. I can see the problem! This is a Maine Coon rear end. The photo comes from the Mütyür & Pindúr website on tumblr. The reason why I am mentioning it is because it appears to be quite a common problem for Maine Coon cat caregivers. How big a problem? I think I have an answer.  On a page of the Reddit.com website there are 35 comments to the question: "How often do you guys have to deal with poop stuck to fur?" And the question is asked on the Maine Coon channel of the website. Mini survey The comments act as a kind of survey. Only two out of the 35 commenters said that they had never had this p...
