Are Maine Coons cuddly?

Image
There are two aspects in answering the question, aren't there? Of course, Maine Coon cats are cuddly felines because one wants to cuddle them. They are fluffy. They have shaggy fur. They look adorable. They make a sweet sound somewhat quiet compared to their size. They are friendly and adorable. You want to cuddle your Maine Coon cat. In that respect they are very cuddly. The other aspect is whether your Maine Coon cat either wants to be cuddled or will accept being cuddled. And that depends on two factors. Firstly, there is the overarching personality characteristics of the Maine Coon cat.  This is a slightly difficult topic because it is somewhat unfair to brand all Maine Coon cats with exactly the same character. You can't really do it but there are some hints about their personality in a book by Gloria Stephe...

Ukrainian guy has a love-in with his Maine Coon on camera

Image
Ukranian guy has a love-in with his Maine Coon on camera. Screenshot. This is the title in Ukrainian and it means 'I love you': Я тебя люблю. The video shows a very large and attractive grey tabby Maine Coon making biscuits (kneading) and pressing his head against the head of his caregiver which is buried into the bed! It is looks a bit weird but they sure as hell love each other bigtime. @gelicoon I love you💛 Я тебя люблю💛 #cutecat #mainecoon #sweethome #peace #catlovers #purr #kitty #family #мейнкун #котик #любимыйкот #семья #милыйдом #любовь ♬ оригинальный звук - GeliCoon There is an obvious intensity in this relationship which looks great especially with such a large domestic cat but this kind of bonding between cat and person is pretty common. Nice video though as I always like to see cats genuinely loved. If the caregiver loves their cat only good can come from it and you can guarantee that the caregiving will be excellent with one caveat: avoid to...

Smartphone addiction is harming the relationship between cats (Maine Coons!) and kids

Image
Maine Coons are great companions for children of all ages. They are a great influence in teaching kids empathy, compassion and taking responsibility for a companion animal who is dependent on human caregiving.  Smartphone addiction harming the relationship between cats (Maine Coons!) and kids. Image in the public domain. Note: she needs a lesson in how to pick up a Maine Coon! Don't basically 😊. Kids learn a lot from all domestic cats and I'd like to think especially the Maine Coon as they have great characters which seem ideal for interactions with children. The Maine Coon is famously suited to form a strong bong with a child. Their generally tolerant nature and calm demeanour makes them well suited for children . Maine Coons can be the same size as children (see above)! This may help to encourage respect for cats at an early age which is carried forward into adulthood. Those are the potential benefits for a child when bonding with a Maine Coon or any other cat. BUT (a big lo...

How can I become my new Maine Coon kitten's "person?"

Image
Maine Coon kitten. Not the kitten referred to in the article. Image: MikeB The person who asked the question in the title on social media also said: "All of our other cats love my girlfriend more, so when I bought our new Maine Coon, I really wanted to finally have a pet that loved me the most. What are some tips to becoming my Maine Coon's bestest friend?" My response was: " Create a bond through a lot of gentle, loving interactions in which you do things that your cat really likes. You'll learn what they like. And plenty of play because they'll like it and it is an interaction between human and cat. Let them share the bed at night and your lap during daytime (if they are a lap cat). Find out their favorite food treats and give them, the same time and the same place to create a routine. He'll ask. Plenty of TLC - tender loving care delivered consistently. Talk to him melodiously (quiet, pleasant voice) and pet him gently and in a way that he likes. Don...

Should you take your Maine Coon walking?

Image
The answer is very much a YES! But it does depend upon where you live and whether your cat is trained to walk on a lead. You are not going to go walking with your Maine Coon cat unless they are on a lead. But the point is this: we see lots of domestic cats nowadays on leads. In fact, we see lots of Maine Coon cats trekking with their cat caregiver. And I think that taking your Maine Coon cat trekking is the best way to take him or her walking. The picture below highlights that. Maine Coon 'Lotus' on a leash in the countryside. Image in the public domain. I guess that's obvious because when you are out trekking you are in the countryside. Nature. It is the perfect place for a Maine Coon cat to be. We all know that Maine Coons hail from barn cats. They were in general outdoor cats for hundreds of years. They have a coat which is made to be outside in cold weather. I know Maine Coons are expensive and precious but they should have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor safely if...

As near as you will get to a conversation with a Maine Coon cat!

Image
This is as near as you will get to a conversation with a Maine Coon cat. Screenshot. This beautiful tabby Maine Coon likes to converse with his female owner. Either they are conversing or they are arguing but I sense, and I think that anybody else would sense, that they are politely conversing. The difficult bit is deciding what he is saying. He's been asked to get down and he doesn't and therefore he's probably saying: "No, I won't get down". And therefore, this might be a gentle, polite argument. They say that Maine Coons are quite quiet but this guy really isn't. As I have always said, it is down to the individual cat as to whether they are quiet or not. The relationship between this cat and his caregiver is very close. They have a great bond and understanding. He is a TikTok celebrity: Chakacoon. The way to play this video below is to click on the centre play button and then afterwards click on the play button bottom-left. That sounds ridiculous but th...

What is it like having a Maine Coon cat as a pet?

Image
Bloody wonderful 😂. Somebody asked this on the Quora.com website. I think that it is a good question because it invites people to answer it. Therefore, I want people to write a comment, please. I'm desperate for comments.  I have lived with a couple of Maine Coons for two weeks. I felt treasured and privileged. Sometimes I am very tempted to adopt a Maine Coon cat. All my life I have adopted rescue cats, unwanted cats and had wonderfully loving relationships with them. But on other occasions my mind wanders to the possibility of living with a beautifully, glamorous, large Maine Coon and taking them for a walk on a leash to impress the neighbours. 'Zak' a Maine Coon I loved. Photo: MikeB My experience of living with these two Maine Coons was obviously good. One of them, Zak, really liked me and we got on so well. He was very lovable and loving. I felt the warmth from him emotionally. I miss him. He's probably passed by now and gone over the rainbow bridge because this w...

Do Maine Coons shed hair less than other cats?

Image
I'm afraid not. Maine Coons are just like any other domestic cat. They shed hair. In fact, as they are medium-longhaired there will be more actual hair in your home because the hair strands are longer. I think the question is a 'cri de cœur' to use a bit of French, by which I mean a desperate cry into the Internet to ask and hope that the Maine Coon sheds less than average because the person who asked the question loves Maine Coons but dislikes the idea of hair lying around their home. It is one of those minor (for some) and major (for others) downsides of being a cat caregiver. You have to learn to live with cat hairs around the home if you live with a cat. That is the best way to deal with it. Just reprogram your mind to accept it. You can minimise it by brushing your Maine Coon with one of those special brushes that picks up dead hair. You will find many examples on Amazon and online in general. Grooming a Maine Coon. Screenshot. I wouldn't advise bathing your cat to...

Bromance in the Highlands: William the Scot and Wallace his Maine Coon

Image
This is a cross-post because the story is sweet. It is the story of an abandoned Maine Coon because he was too big, too greedy and too demanding according to his previous 'owner'. Now he is loved. And, yes, he is demanding! Demanding of love and attention.  Bromance in the Highlands: William the Scot and Wallace his Maine Coon.  Photo: Katrina Stewart. Bromance in the Highlands: William the Scot and Wallace his Maine Coon. Photo: Katrina Stewart. He was adopted by William, an ex-military man who lives with Katrina Stewart. She calls herself Kat, an apt name. She takes good photos. It all adds up to a nice package. All the elements are in place and I think the William and Wallace bromance will become big on social media.  At the moment they have a nice Facebook page with over 700 followers but the number is climbing. It will, partly because I have publicised it and they deserve it! I love the way William loves having Wallace on his shoulders or on his head. This cat a...
