Maine Coon sociability towards other cats and humans

Image
This is a very short note based upon a study which I'm currently reading on the cat breeds. In one part of the study they assessed breed differences in respect of sociability towards cats, sociability towards humans and activity/playfulness. The Maine Coon performed as follows: Sociability towards cats: the Maine Coon is in the bottom four under this criteria. It is below average in terms of sociability towards other cats. How does one interpret that? On a strict sense one must be driven to the conclusion that Maine Coon cats are less likely to make friends or be friendly with other domestic cats in a multi-cat home. I don't see this trait having a big effect on caregiving. Another possibility is that this breed may be more hostile than average towards strange cats coming onto their home range. Sociability towards humans: the Maine Coon cat does slightly better under this heading as they are near the midpoint of all the breeds in terms of sociability towards humans but a litt...

What is the activity level of the Maine Coon cat?

Laid back, golden-eyed silver tabby Maine Coon looks down on their slave. Image in the public domain. One well-known Maine Coon cat website asks whether Maine Coon cats are hyper? And they go on to state that Maine Coon kittens are a little hyper which, as it happens, is typical of all kittens of all domestic cat breeds and random bred cats. It is just the nature of young kittens in the same way that it is the nature of young humans. But the word "hyper" is very far from the behaviour of the adult Maine Coon cat. My impression is that it is the opposite pretty well. One very obvious sign that Maine Coon cats are in general calm individuals is that you see many photographs on the Internet of Maine Coons cat owners holding up their cat to show them off to the camera and the expression on the cat's face could not be any calmer. They take it all in their stride. There is no struggling or wriggling to signal that they want to be put down as quickly as possible. I have a strong...

Are Maine Coons active?

Image
In an absolute sense Maine Coons have a medium activity level which means that they are neither lazy and inactive or very active according to a former president of the Cat Fanciers' Association and a show judge, Richard Gebhardt. But there are factors which have an impact on activity levels and they are as follows:- Maine Coons have average activity levels. Photo in public domain (modified by MikeB). The environment affects a cat's activity level. I would argue that sometimes, and I stress sometimes, full-time indoor Maine Coon cats might be forced to be relatively inactive because their owner might not be around much and the environment in which they live is not what experts call 'enriched', meaning things to do in it.  I said that Maine Coons should not be allowed outside  (unless in an enclosure or on a leash) and therefore the only way to stimulate activity would be to engage with your cat regularly and have an enclosure attached to the home (a catio) where a cat...
