Maine Coon, Winston, loves water but is he typical?

Image
This Maine Coon who is called Winston loves water but are all Maine Coons the same? We don't know whether this trait is inherited or whether he learned to love water because he was in and around it when he was tiny. However, we read a lot about the Maine Coon cat loving water. There seems to be an Internet trend which states that all Maine Coon cats love water and it is part of their character. I do not believe that that is true or if there is some truth in it, it is not a character trait which is as outstanding as stated. When I hear that Maine Coon cats love water, I hear it on the Internet but I don't get that from the reference books that I have in my possession. This Maine Coon who is called Winston loves water but are all Maine Coons the same? Screenshot. There may be a passing reference to it such as in Dr. Bruce Fogle's The Encyclopaedia of the Cat. He says that "While the Maine Coon enjoys the company of people, it is not a dependent breed, but is content to p...

Do Maine Coon cats drink a lot of water?

Image
I could ask whether Maine Coon cats drink a lot of water with their paws because I've seen this a lot especially with Maine Coon cats. And it seems for some reason that Maine Coons are fascinated with water. The experts say that they love to keep hydrated! Do Maine Coon cats have a particular awareness about their hydration? And they prefer to drink running or moving water rather than water in a bowl. Is it fair to say that Maine Coon cats are obsessed with water? If this breed is more interested in water than the average cat it begs the question as to why? And why do they use their paws more than is normal? Well, some of this reputation is an exaggeration which has been pushed around the internet by websites. Do Maine Coon cats drink a lot of water? I am not sure. It is said they do but I think this is an exaggerated reputation? However if the love of water is a personality trait of this cat breed, it must be because of hundred years of selective breeding. Normally cat breeders se...

Reason to get a Maine Coon: they do not fear water!

Image
Maine Coon slips into the water for a bit of fun. Screenshot. The video on this page supports the words of the title. But is it true that all Maine Coons do not fear water? I almost feel like leaving that decision to you. There is no science on this and all you will find on the Internet is anecdotal stories about Maine Coons not being frightened or objecting to being submerged in water.  Perhaps there is a tendency for Maine Coons to be less resistant to being submerged in water but I don't think you can say that all the cats of the Maine Coon breed have the same attitude towards water. We don't know anything about the cats in the video. Or at least I don't. Perhaps they are a bunch of Maine Coons who have made it clear that they like messing around in water and the video maker decided to video it. This video has done very well on TikTok. For all Maine Coon cats to like messing around and being submerged in water the cat associations would have to insist that, through selec...

"Fisher" the Maine Coon cat likes to swim in the waters of Key West

Image
They say that Maine Coons love water and if that is true then this is just another example but I don't believe that all Maine Coons automatically like water. It is a misconception to believe that all cats of one breed are all the same. It is unreasonable to think that because each cat is an individual. Certainly, cat breeders, using line breeding, try and keep their offspring the same as their parents so there might be a certain uniformity in character across all Maine Coons but within that umbrella uniformity there will be a considerable amount of divergence or variance. Having got that introduction out of the way, this individual Maine Coon whose name is aptly "Fisher" loves to swim and that love of the water almost certainly comes about because he was introduced to it at a very young age. Fisher travels with his family all over the US so he's very much used to a wide variety of landscapes...
