If your Maine Coon cat is anxious try these basic guidelines

Image
Although unlikely, it is possible that a Maine Coon living in a nice home might become anxious. If the problem exists the causes would be a mixture of a timid character plus environmental circumstances such as the owner's absence or issues between cats in a multi-cat home. Note: Although as mentioned Maine Coons can be anxious it should be relatively unusual as in general this cat breed is made up of pretty laid-back cats. They have solid characters. But bad circumstances can make any cat anxious. Concerned Maine Coon, probably because of the photographer! Image: PetCareRx Here are some tips that might be helpful: Don't force your Maine Coon cat to confront what frightens them. If they are frightened of a particular area such as near the washing machine don't take your cat to that particular area to try and show them that there is nothing to be frightened about. Rather gradually encourage them over a period of time to go closer to the room until they go there of their own f...

Maine Coon is "still peeing and now pooping outside the box. Help!"

This is the plea for help on one of the Maine Coon categories on Reddit.com: "We took him to the vet and he was given a clean bill of health. We gave him gabapentin to help just in case he was experiencing discomfort but he hated it. We added more litter boxes. We used cat attract litter added to our regular litter in every box. We got a bigger litter box. We changed litter types while still offering the old type (different boxes.) We got a pheromone plug in. We took away the dog pheromone plug ins we were using. We clean with an odor eliminating spray. He only pees on the tile in the kitchen area and when he pees his feet seem to slide out to where he’s almost sitting. Initially he was just peeing on the floor but now he’s pooping too. He did get some poop stuck on his butt and we started clipping his privates to prevent this. Whatever boxes we add our other two cats just use the newest box. I have like 5 unused litter boxes in my house right now. Please help. It’s so gross in he...

Can Maine Coons be left alone?

Image
Can Maine Coons be left alone? The answer depends on for how long! I guess that is obvious. Five minutes? Yes, 5 hours? Yes. A full day, just about but don't do it regularly. I don't think any domestic cat should be left alone every day such as when their owner goes to work and leaves their Maine Coon at home in an apartment for the entire time.  and even goes out in the evening; not good. That does not work for me, and neither will it work for the cat. Although they will have to tolerate it sometimes but perhaps at the expense of their health: separation anxiety causes stress and possible aliments such as idiopathic cystitis. Stressed Maine Coon. Image in public domain. The answer to the question in the title is No, because the question is by implication: 'Can Maine Coons be left alone all day every day?" And it does not matter if we are referring to domestic cats of any breed including non-purebred cats. They all have the same essential emotional requirements, which ...
