Majestic Maine Coon meets the cutest Persian kitten

Image
This is one of those ah... moments. The cutest Persian kitten gingerly sneaks up to a 19-pound, majestic snow-white Maine Coon who looks on with calm disdain. It is a very cute video. And nice to see these two very different cat breeds together in the same video.  The cutest Persian kitten gingerly sneaks up to a majestic snow-white Maine Coon who looks on with calm disdain. Screenshot. This is the first time these two have met. It looks like the Persian kitten is new to the home and the resident cat is the white Maine Coon which is why he is not really very welcoming towards the Persian. It'll take a little while for the resident Maine Coon to accept the little incomer. But for first contact is a success, I'd say. Kitten reaches out to make friends and is rebutted! Screenshot. The kitten really wants to make friends and reaches out to touch the Maine Coon who responds negatively. I have good feeling that things will change and that the Maine Coon will warm to the newcomer and ...

1900: Tell the difference between Maine Coon and Persian?

Image
Back in the good old days of the cat fancy when there were half a dozen cat breeds and when cat breeds where distinguished by their coat, the difference between the Maine Coon and Persian cats was visually quite fine. It is difficult to understand that nowadays because there is a huge difference in appearance between these cats. That difference is due to 100 years of selective breeding for appearance. They are labelled so you can see which breed the cat is. Note: back in 1900 the Maine Coon was still referred to as a "Maine cat" meaning coming from the state of Maine. I think these photographs illustrate the point I have made. All domestic cats were originally similar. ...

Maine Coon versus Persian

Image
It seems that people search for information on a comparison between the Maine Coon and the Persian. Both are breeds that have been around since the beginning of the cat fancy but on either side of the pond (Atlantic Ocean!). They are very different in appearance and somewhat different in temperament. I say "somewhat" because although you could say they are different in temperament you have to factor in the character of each individual cat. You will meet some Persians that behave a bit like a Maine Coon and vice-versa. People tend to forget that an individual cat's character can outweigh the breed's character. The latter is a bit of a myth anyway. In general the Maine Coon is described as relaxed and people orientated but not overdependent. While the Persian is described as laid back and decorative (Gloria Stephens). The Maine Coon is a large, rangy cat with an uneven shaggy medium long hair. It can be bred to be refined and delicate (CFA style) or a bit more rou...
