Why is my Maine Coon small?

Size is relative. If you think your Maine coon cat is small it may be because you are comparing the size of your cat with some of the humongous Maine Coons on the Internet. We tend only to see these massive cats and start to believe that all Maine Coons are the same. These very large Maine Coons are exceptional. What I'm saying is that your Maine Coon might not be small.

But that said, the average Maine Coon is normally not substantially bigger than an average domestic cat. They are the largest domestic cat breed, yes, but in many cases, it is not by much. Females are smaller than males. Some breeders breed Maine Coons bigger than other breeders. A smallish female will be the same size as a regular domestic cat which is slightly bigger than normal.

The point that I'm laboriously making is that "small" is relative to the size of other cats and other Maine Coons. And don't think that all Maine Coons are enormous because they are not. The Internet tells me that the average male, Maine Coon weight is between 5.9-8.2 kg (13 pounds-18 pounds). The average female weighs between 3.6 kg-5.4 kg which in pounds is 8 pounds-12 pounds.

Based on those weights, female Maine Coons are very often a similar size to a decent-sized regular non-purebred cat. In fact, there will be many male moggy cats who are bigger than female Maine Coons.

I hope that answers your question. Don't let the size of your Maine Coon bother you. It isn't about size or even about appearance. It's all about the character of the cat and the bond that you have with them. It's about whether your cat is content in their life through being properly stimulated and loved.

P.S. There is another possibility: some people think they have a Maine Coon when they're probably living with a Maine Coon mix, not a purebred cat. Maine Coon mix cats are regular-sized cats normally.

  1. My Madison is one of those “small Maine Coons” only I never ever have nor would consider her a Maine Coon since inherent in the definition is their large size. I do regard her as having MC in her
    genes.
