Maine Coon size versus dog size?

People want to know how the size of the Maine Coon compares to the size of a dog. You probably realise that it is impossible to answer this question because dog size varies enormously. This is due to selective breeding over about 20 years or more. And, it has to be said, the size of the Maine Coon also varies considerably.

Here is another image comparing a Beagle and a standard Maine Coon from a YouTube video:

And here is a Golden Retriever and Maine Coon playing. This dog breed is quite large:

People get the impression that all Maine Coons are always huge but they are not. Maine Coons can be a little larger than standard domestic cats (small female for instance) but in general they are considerably larger and the largest domestic cat breed.

Beagle - an average, medium-sized dog

Having got that introduction out of the way, I might be able to provide some sort of answer. Let's take a medium-sized dog as a good starting point. I can think of a Beagle as being a nice, typical medium-sized dog.

According to The American Kennel Club, a full-grown beagle should weigh around 20 pounds. Of course the weight varies between individuals in the usual way. Beagle standing between 13-15 inches in height should weigh between 20-30 pounds.

Animal Planet states that a healthy Beagle should weigh between 25-35 pounds. The average for an adult female is between 19.8-22 pounds.

Maine Coon versus Beagle in size

So we can argue that a medium-sized dogs such as the Beagle, which to a cat owner looks like a normal medium-sized dog weighs around the same as a large Maine Coon. Large Maine Coons can weigh about 20+ pounds. Exceptionally they can weigh more such as the enormous cats we sometimes see on the Internet. But these are very rare creatures. They may even weigh as much as 30 pounds.

Let's say that a large Maine Coon weighs around 25 pounds. This is the same as a Beagle.

I think the comparison between a beagle and a Maine Coon is quite a nice one to try and get a handle on how to compare Maine Coon size and dog size. I don't think it's really feasible to do it any other way.

That's why I have produced a picture at the top of this page showing a Maine Coon against a Beagle.
