Bigger cat, bigger problems with a Maine Coon?

One Maine Coon owner said on TikTok that if you have a bigger cat, you have bigger problems. As the Maine Coon (MC) is the biggest domestic cat you will have more problems. Bullocks 😎. She has to be wrong. The MC is pretty well like any other domestic cat except for their size and distinctive appearance. I guess they eat more but that is not a great hardship. There is one truth to the statement.

The MC is prone to hip dysplasia as you probably know (and patellar luxation - a knee problem). This is a loose hip joint. The biggest MCs are more prone. So size is an issue here. MCs are almost famous for having hip dysplasia. Not a good reputation and size plays a role in this disease. But I believe that she is not referring to the disease. She almost blames MCs for destroying furniture but all domestic cats will scratch furniture if there isn't a really solid scratching post to deter them. Even then they still might do it as it is entirely natural and necessary.

The price of MCs might be higher than she states. It depends on the quality. My theory is that a cat caregiver should never complain about their cat's behavior if it is normal feline behavior as they should be fully aware of the responsibilities of cat ownership before they adopt. Cats are top predators. They are not little humans even if we do think of them like that sometimes. And neither are they dogs. They don't behave like dogs e.g. the obedience is lacking. Although you can train a cat to be pretty obedient. It just takes more work.

And to be woken in the morning or in the middle of the night is part and parcel of living with a cat companion. They have different circadian rhythms.

But, being frank, I have my moments too, like anyone else with cat behavior when I am feeling grumpy. There can be a clash of cultures sometimes. There is bound to be as we are very different species.

Note: I am not being critical of the video maker.  She just wanted to find a topic for her video and chose size and the problems it brings. I disagree. Of course, if an MC was the size of a lion there would be bigger problems. Gigantic problems.
