What does a "European" Maine Coon cost in the United States?

The price can be up to $3,500 and sometimes more. There are two distinct types of Maine Coon in terms of appearance and this is a fairly recent development. The European type Maine Coons bred in the US are bigger and more 'extreme'. The word 'extreme' means exaggerated features such as large bodies, stronger (larger) muzzles, larger ears, longer and denser lynx tips to the ears, bigger paws, more hair between the toes and so on.

Just more outstanding in appearance. These 'extra features' are is not demanded by the American cat associations' breed standards. It's the breeders who've created this in following the breed standard and going beyond it.

And because the internet is awash with great photos of extreme European type Maine Coons there is a greater demand for them than the traditional cat show winning Maine Coons.

On my estimation as at March 2023, this means that the price of European Maine Coons can be much higher than those of traditional 'American' Maine Coons.

One breeder in Washington says this about the price of her European Maine Coons:
"My “European” Maine coons are 3,500 in Washington state. I have 20 applications before my first litter of kittens are even born. The demand for them is extreme if you create it for your cattery and demand drives the prices up along with what the market is in your area. Because I know the back end of breeding and how much time it takes, I will say that A LOT of breeders are under charging."

She appears to be saying that some buyers are buying to breed the cats. They are buying to create their own blood lines of European style MCs.

Breeders do sell cats that are not fixed (unsterilized) to breeders but charge more. Non-breeding cats can be 'pet quality' which on my understanding means cheaper. Then there are show quality MCs which are more expensive.

The point is that there is a range of prices depending on:

  • quality
  • breeding or non-breeding - unsterilized or sterilized
  • European or American (traditional) style
At the lower end the price at March 2023 would be around $1,200. Mid-range might be $1,500-$2,000 and top of the range $3,500.

But these are numbers that I have seen in my travels around the internet. You'd be advised to do your own research.

At the end of the day the purchase price is a fraction of the lifetime maintenance costs so I wouldn't skimp on purchase price.
