Majestic solid blue male Maine Coon is perfect right down to his nose leather

Well, if you are interested in buying/adopting a blue Maine Coon, this is the sort of cat you should be considering. So perfectly Maine Coon. So handsome and distinguished. So much so that it is almost undignified that he is playing (reluctantly) with the tease waved in front of his face.

This is the CFA breed standard for Maine Coon Colors - solid color class. You can see that there are five different solid colours allowed for this cat breed under the Cat Fanciers' Association.

  • WHITE: pure glistening white. Nose leather and paw pads: pink.
  • BLACK: dense coal black, sound from roots to tip of fur. Free from any tinge of rust on tips or smoke undercoat. Nose leather: black. Paw pads: black or brown.
  • BLUE: one level tone from nose to tip of tail. Sound to the roots. Nose leather and paw pads: blue.
  • RED: deep, rich, clear, brilliant red; without shading, markings, or ticking. Lips and chin the same color as coat. Nose leather and paw pads: brick red.
  • CREAM: one level shade of buff cream, without markings. Sound to the roots. Nose leather and paw pads: pink
Eye colour:

EYE COLOR: eye color can be shades of green, gold, green-gold or copper. White cats and all cats with white may have blue or odd eyes. This cat has very light green eyes in line with the requirements of the CFA breed standard.

Blue

As you might know, blue is essentially the dilution of a black coat. In reality, the blue coat - as it is misleadingly called - varies between pale gray and slate gray and is hardly 'blue'. There is a tinge of blue.

There are many pattern variance of this colour within the modern pedigree cat breeds including, for example, blue chinchilla silver, blue cream smoke, blue silver tabby, blue silver patched tabby, blue silver tabby and white, blue smoke, blue tabby, blue tabby and white and so on.

The picture of the cat on this page and in the video show a perfect example of a solid blue coloured Maine Coon. The cat looks very male in their overall appearance. The face is very strong and the muzzle very large and square. To me, having seen lots of male and female cats, this cat shouts quite loudly that "I'm male!"

How the blue colour shows - my theory!

Wild cats

In 1938 the skin of a Canadian lynx, obtained from Alaska and donated to the US National Museum proved to be a bluish-gray colour instead of the usual form. Enquiries from traders in the region where it originated revealed that such mutants with the dilutant coat colour genes occurred once or twice in every thousand pelts. Clearly, the blue gene that lies behind the various colour forms of domestic cats is also expressing itself in a small way among wild felines.
